With over 1,500 organisations, including nationally known brands, the North East Food & Drink sector generates an annual turnover of £3.5bn and is successfully evolving to meet new consumer demands for the likes of ethical, organic, free range and locally sourced products.
The sector, which encompasses manufacture, production, processing and quality assurance, is more resilient than other industries.

The biggest employers within the Food & Drink sector are bakeries followed by the meat sub sector. While most employ less than five people, the North East also boasts an impressive number of large household names such as Greggs, Nestle, United Biscuits, PepsiCo and Kerry Foods.
Established projects such as the Regional Food Group, Food Technology Centre and North East Food & Drink Network and partner Northumbria Larder are delivering improvements to industry and driving the sector forward.
Many employees stay with the same company for a long time and only 4% are temping agency staff. Jobs where skills shortages apply include managers and supervisors, food scientists and engineers, and those with specialist food trade skills such as cheese makers and butchers.
