Low Carbon Vehicles

With an internationally recognised reputation as a leading car manufacturing centre in the UK and an emerging low carbon vehicle industry, the North East’s automotive sector has a promising future.

The sector encompasses vehicle manufacturers that are designing, developing and making cars and commercial vehicles, those specialising in advanced precision engineering for motor sports and others supplying component parts.

"Ambitious automotive engineers, designers and researchers who want to be part of an exciting low carbon vehicle industry will find a challenging career in the North East."

Nissan’s Sunderland plant produces a third of all cars made in the UK. Other key employers include international manufacturers like Caterpillar and Komatsu as well as Sevcon and Avid.

The status of being the UK’s first Low Carbon Economic Area for Ultra Low Carbon Vehicles is creating many exciting business and career opportunities.

Opportunities will flow from the £10.7m low carbon vehicle project which will see 35 passenger vehicles being developed across the North East and the installation of 1300 electric charging points over the next few years to create a world-class infrastructure.

With so many exciting new developments in the North East, creative people as well as those with ‘hands on’ trade skills will be much in demand.

Professions include: production line operatives, designers, safety engineers, part manufacturers, researchers, planners and IT experts.
