LIVING AND WORKING IN THE NORTH EAST
PASSIONATE PEOPLE. PASSIONATE PLACES.
With a fascinating history, a plethora of cultural attractions and breathtaking natural scenery, the North East attracts visitors from around the world, opening up many job opportunities in the Tourism and Hospitality sector, which employs around 80,000 people.
Entry level positions in the restaurant sector for bar and waiting staff, cooks and catering assistants are often a good way to get your foot on the ladder, especially as the higher turnover of staff means vacancies become available quite frequently. There is also an increased demand for chefs that specialise in ethnic or speciality food.
"Whether your ambition is to be a hotel manager, a tour guide, a chef or a wedding planner at one of the North East’s many stunning venues, there are lots of opportunities to advance your career."
At present a third of the North East workforce within this sector is trained to NVQ Level 2 or above, but by 2010 it’s estimated that 95% of all new jobs in tourism and hospitality will require this level of qualification.
The North East has many colleges, universities and private training organisations geared up to the needs of the hospitality sector where you can undertake studies such as the Diploma in tourism marketing or the new Gold Standard Customer Service, which started in July 2009.
